Tax Setup

Sellmitra’s tax module follows the Indian GST structure. Before you can apply taxes to products or generate invoices automatically, you need to set up two things: Tax Types and Tax Rules.

  1. Create Your Tax Types
  2. Start by defining the tax components you use in your business.

    Common examples in India include:
    • CGST
    • SGST
    • IGST

Each tax type has a name, optional description, and an active status. Once created, these tax types can be used in your tax rules.

  3. Set Up Your Tax Rule
  4. A tax rule tells Sellmitra which tax applies in which situation and what percentage should be charged.

This is essential for automatic tax calculation at checkout and during invoice generation.

Because GST varies based on the buyer’s location, each tax rule includes three sections:

    Scenario 1: Home State

Applied when the vendor and customer are in the same Indian state.

Vendor is in Gujarat and customer is also in Gujarat.

    You may assign:

    • CGST: 9%
    • SGST: 9%

    Scenario 2: Other State (Interstate)

Applied when the vendor and customer are in different states within India.

Example: Vendor is in Gujarat and customer is in Maharashtra.

    You may assign:

    IGST: 18%

    Scenario 3: Export

    Applied when selling outside India.

Example: Vendor in India shipping internationally.

    Usually:

    IGST: 0%

Each of these sections contains a list of tax rates defined by:

    • tax_type
    • rate (percentage)
Apply Tax Rule to Your Product

You don’t assign individual tax rates to each product.

You simply select one Tax Rule, and Sellmitra automatically handles:

  • CGST + SGST for same-state orders
  • IGST for interstate orders
  • 0% IGST for exports

This reduces errors and ensures invoices follow GST requirements.
